Mbappé Double Gives Real Madrid Clasico Win at Barcelona
Kylian Mbappé scored twice, the winner in the 87th minute, as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 and ended their nine-match league winning run.
Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid won 2-1 at Barcelona, ending the home side's record-equalling run of nine league wins. His second goal came in the 87th minute. Jude Bellingham found Eduardo Camavinga, who ran clear, beat Pau Cubarsí and pulled the ball back for Mbappé to finish.
It was the first time Barcelona failed to win in the league this season, and the first time they had failed to win any game at the Camp Nou since returning there a year ago. For Mbappé it was his 10th goal against Barcelona.
"The world that loves football will have stopped to watch this and they won't have gone disappointed; this was two teams that played to win," said Madrid manager José Mourinho. "I'm not going to let them have their heads on the moon," he added. Before the match Barcelona had been averaging 4.3 goals a game and could have gone nine points clear.
How the match unfolded
Madrid stepped onto the front foot early. Arda Güler shot over after four minutes, and Fede Valverde opened up the pitch with long diagonal passes. Marc Cucurella went hard at Lamine Yamal, drawing roars of anger from the home crowd. In the 41st minute Cucurella released Yan Diomandé, whose low, hard cross struck Gerard Martín and then Mbappé before going in.
Barcelona came back after the break. On the hour Yamal took a corner short to Pedri, who slipped a reversed ball to Raphinha, and he struck low into the net. Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin then made a stop from Martín's header, and Dean Huijsen stopped a Yamal shot with his face. Madrid, tired by then, held on until Mbappé's late finish.
Elsewhere in Europe
Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Freiburg to retake top spot in the Bundesliga on goal difference ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry, with his 100th Bundesliga goal, gave Bayern a 2-0 lead, and Michael Olise sealed it in the fifth minute of added time after a Tom Bischof own goal. Bayern remain without head coach Vincent Kompany, who collapsed in training on Friday. In Italy, Inter came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1, with Marcus Thuram equalising and Piotr Zielinski converting a stoppage-time penalty.
