OpenAI Close to $30B Round Led by UAE Investors
OpenAI is reportedly raising up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, with UAE investors and Coatue leading a round described as a bridge to a possible IPO.
OpenAI is close to finalizing a funding round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, according to people familiar with the deal who asked not to be named because the details are confidential. The valuation does not include the new capital.
Investors from the United Arab Emirates are leading the round together with Coatue. The financing is described as an "opportunistic" bridge ahead of a potential IPO.
Talks began in September, when investors approached the San Francisco-based company with proposals. On Thursday OpenAI told investors it aims to collect signatures by the end of next week. The final size of the round is still being determined.
Compute and the IPO
Alongside the investment, OpenAI is negotiating a commercial deal that would secure more computing capacity from the UAE, according to one person. In February the company told investors it is targeting roughly $600 billion in total compute spending by 2030.
OpenAI confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, but it has not said when it plans to list. In August, chief financial officer Sarah Friar told employees that the company "will be a public company in 2027." The following month chief executive Sam Altman said that "right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public."
Rival Anthropic is also preparing a large IPO. It confidentially filed its own prospectus in June and, as previously reported, is meeting prospective investors. The company is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion in its offering. In May, Anthropic closed a $65 billion funding round at a valuation of $965 billion.
