Sheffield Wednesday Sack Head Coach Henrik Pedersen

Sports ·

Pedersen leaves after under 15 months and two League One defeats in five days. Matt Hamshaw takes over on an interim basis.

Sheffield Wednesday have dismissed head coach Henrik Pedersen, who had been in charge for less than 15 months. The decision followed two League One defeats in five days.

His last match was a 2-0 loss at Doncaster Rovers in the South Yorkshire derby on Saturday. Wednesday conceded twice in the first 17 minutes, and fans called for the 48-year-old to go. On Tuesday the team had lost 2-0 at Notts County. The side has won one of its last six league games and failed to score in four of them.

Matt Hamshaw has taken charge on an interim basis. Rotherham United sacked him after less than a year last season, and he joined Wednesday as a coach in August. His first game will be the visit of sixth-placed Cambridge United on Tuesday.

Wednesday are eighth after 11 games, two points outside the play-off places. They were relegated last season in record time after a 2025-26 campaign marked by financial problems, fan protests and an 18-point penalty.

In a statement, the club said Pedersen had provided "stability and leadership" during an "exceptional period in the club's history". Sporting director Simon Wilson said the club had expected a "difficult" start and wanted "a recognisable style of play and greater consistency in our performances". "Although we have accumulated points, we haven't seen enough progress in those areas," he said. "We believe making a change now gives us the best opportunity to establish those foundations and build towards the second half of the season and beyond."

After the Doncaster defeat, Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield he had heard fans chanting against him. "I'm hurting like they are hurt," he said. "After zero points from two games, I'm not happy... nobody is happy. I'm sure we can bounce back and have a strong season."
