Aston Villa Beat Man City 2-1 as Jackson Scores Twice
Nicolas Jackson scored both goals at Villa Park to end Manchester City's unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, with Nicolas Jackson scoring both goals, and City lost a league match for the first time this season.
The first goal came from a mistake. Marc Guéhi could not control the ball and spilled it to John McGinn, who played it on to Jackson. Jackson finished, and he added the second. Guéhi, who had been booked in the 32nd minute, was substituted at half-time.
Guéhi's errors have now cost City three goals in two league games. Ipswich scored twice against City last weekend after mistakes by the defender. City manager Enzo Maresca said he was not concerned about him. "No, I'm not worried about Marc at all," Maresca said. "I know that he's played every minute since the season started with us, with the international team, so it's not easy." He said the change was also because Guéhi was on a yellow card, and that with the aggressive style City want to play, a booking can be dangerous.
Chances and saves
City had 15 shots to Villa's eight and dropped points for the first time this season. Villa scored from their only two shots on target. Zion Suzuki made several important saves in the second half to keep City out.
"I think we deserved more from the game, for the amount of chances that we created and for the chances that we conceded," Maresca said. "We lost because probably we have not been clinical enough in their box and sometimes when you concede the first goal because of the mistake, the second goal again comes from transition in 45 minutes. It's difficult to avoid that every time, but we learn from the game and we try to move on and to improve."
Jackson now has seven goals since moving from Chelsea. Villa manager Unai Emery called him a "fantastic" match-winner. "He's very demanding of himself to improve things," Emery said. "Today he scored two goals, in the last matches he scored goals - but at the beginning of the season, what happened to us was more difficult and he was shooting a lot of balls over the corner. Now, he's getting better at shooting. He's working fantastically tactically, he's understanding as well where we need him."
Suzuki, another summer signing, arrived as the replacement for Emiliano Martínez. Matty Cash told TNT Sport that when the goalkeeper first trained with the squad, "in the possession drill I thought we'd signed a midfielder. His vision is unbelievable, he catches crosses really well which as a full-back is a dream."
