New Public-College Accreditor Approves Florida Polytechnic

Education ·

The Commission for Public Higher Education has granted accreditation to Florida Polytechnic University, its first decision since it was founded in 2025.

The Commission for Public Higher Education (CPHE) has voted to grant accreditation to Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland, Florida. It is the first accreditation decision the commission has made since its founding in 2025, and it closes CPHE's inaugural institutional review.

Florida Poly, a public STEM-focused school, was the first institution to complete a site visit under the CPHE process.

How the decision was reached

A Peer Review Team visited on August 5 and 6, 2026. It looked at governance, academic quality, student success, financial sustainability, institutional effectiveness and continuous improvement.

The team passed its findings to the Accreditation Advisory Committee, which reviewed them and recommended accreditation. CPHE executives wrote a recommendation of their own. The Board of Directors then made the final call under the commission's standards, policies and peer-review procedures.

CPHE calls itself the nation's first institutional accreditor built only for public higher education.

Six university systems founded it: the State University System of Florida, Texas A&M University System, University of North Carolina System, University of South Carolina System, University of Tennessee System and University System of Georgia.

The commission plans to apply to the U.S. Department of Education for recognition as an accrediting agency. That recognition would let it determine whether institutions are eligible for federal financial aid.

Mark Becker, chair of the CPHE board, said the commission set out "to build a new approach to accreditation specifically designed to meet the needs of public higher education." He praised Florida Poly's leadership, faculty and staff.

Cameron Howell, CPHE's president and CEO, called the decision a defining moment. He said the aim is to "create a process that maintains rigorous standards while reducing unnecessary administrative burdens," with an emphasis on student outcomes.

Florida Poly President Devin Stephenson called the accreditation "a tremendous honor and a historic achievement for Florida Polytechnic University." He credited faculty, staff and leadership, and said the university helped pioneer CPHE's approach.
