JetBlue Raises First Checked Bag to $50 Each Way

Travel · ·

JetBlue's second bag-fee increase this year takes the minimum first-bag charge from $39 to $50 for tickets bought from November 3.

Checking a bag on JetBlue costs more again. The airline has raised checked-bag fees for the second time this year, and the first bag is at least $50 each way on most North American and Caribbean routes, up from $39.

What JetBlue says and what it reports

A spokesperson said the change helps offset rising fuel and operating costs, keeps base fares competitive and lets customers pay only for the services they use.

The airline reported a $257 million third-quarter loss, and it denied speculation about a possible bankruptcy last week. Unlike some international rivals, US airlines mostly leave fuel purchases unhedged, so higher prices hit their costs faster. Bag fees win back some of that cost while the fare shown in searches stays put.

JetBlue has moved first on bags before. After its March 2026 increase, other major US carriers made their own adjustments within weeks. A repeat is not certain, but rivals could now raise their own fees without being the first to do it.

The new price list

The fees apply to tickets bought on or after November 3, 2026. Earlier bookings keep the old schedule.

On flights within the US, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, the first bag costs $50 off-peak when paid online or in the app more than 24 hours before departure. At peak times it is $55. Adding a bag within 24 hours of departure costs $60 off-peak or $70 at peak.

A second bag is $70 off-peak and $75 at peak when prepaid, then $75 and $85 closer to departure. A third bag is $200 on any date. On the cheapest economy fares to Europe, the first bag starts at $80 and reaches $100 if bought late.

For one bag on a peak-season round trip, that means $110 prepaid or $140 at the airport.

Where the fee has been

The minimum was $35 in May 2024, then $39 in March 2026, and now $50. That is a 42.9% rise over roughly two and a half years.

Prices depend on demand, booking time and route. Peak pricing runs through most of the summer, late May into early September, and around big holidays. In 2027 only March has no peak dates.

Who still flies with free bags

The higher fee reaches beyond basic economy. Main and Main Flex customers pay it unless an eligible fare, a loyalty program or a JetBlue credit card covers their bags.

Mint passengers get checked bags with the fare. TrueBlue Mosaic members receive one or two free bags, depending on status. Holders of eligible JetBlue Plus, Business and Premier cards get a free first bag, and so do up to three people traveling with them, if the card paid for the trip.

Our View

Advertised fares can stay low while bag charges climb, which makes a like-for-like comparison between airlines harder. Whether rivals announce increases in the coming weeks will show if JetBlue's move spreads. For a carrier that is losing money, the test is whether travelers accept higher extras without booking elsewhere.
